Good Source of Calcium and Magnesium

November 9th, 2009

Green leafy vegetables are not only excellent sources of calcium but they also provide adequate amounts of magnesium. Spinach is one of the vegetables that can be considered a good source of calcium and magnesium. Almonds, beans and other nuts are also rich sources of these two nutrients and come under the vegetarian diet.

Milk and dairy products are good non-vegetarian sources of calcium but they do not provide adequate amounts of magnesium. Children under the age of 10 require up to 120 mg of magnesium and 800 mg of calcium. ¼ cup of almonds, soybean, peanuts and cashews provide 30 – 100 mg of magnesium.

To balance your daily intake of minerals eat non-fat foods. Avoid saturated fat, a protein-rich diet coming from animal sources, alcoholic and soft drinks, too much sugar and tobacco. Any good source of calcium and magnesium is effective only if both these minerals are readily absorbed by the bloodstream. Furthermore, to prevent calcium loss through urine you need to increase your daily intake of vitamin D and phosphorus.

Many nutritional supplements available out there contain calcium and magnesium together along with many other vitamins and minerals. These supplements or tablets can also be considered a good source of calcium and magnesium. Try to find good-quality calcium tablets that contain high concentration of calcium along with adequate amounts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, vitamin D and vitamin K2.

Calcium tablets that fulfill both calcium and magnesium needs on a daily basis are the best ones to buy. It has been discovered that coral calcium obtained from fossilized coral reefs above sea level contains magnesium, potassium and sodium along with high concentration of calcium carbonate in just the right quantities. This particular compound helps to fights against many degenerative diseases and also acts as a good source of calcium and magnesium.

To buy high-quality calcium and magnesium supplements, look around for Okinawan coral calcium supplements. This special coral calcium comes from Okinawa island of Japan and is popular for its purity and effectiveness. It is easy to absorb and digest and can be used by people of all ages without any reservation.

Normally doctors recommend consuming 2-3 calcium tablets daily after each meal. Calcium carbonate and coral calcium supplements are best absorbed in the presence of stomach acid. Consequently they reduce acidity, helps in proper digestion of food and also assist in weight loss.

Magnesium Citrate

November 9th, 2009

By Elizabeth Morgan

Magnesium citrate is the citrate salt of the element magnesium. It is a commonly used therapeutic drug and is prescribed as a laxative. It is retailed under the names Citrate of Magnesia, Milk of Magnesia, Citronesia and Citroma. Magnesium citrate is available for intake in the form of powder, which can be dissolved with water. It is also available in the form of tablets. It has the greatest effect when it is taken with water or juices on an empty stomach.

Magnesium citrate can attract water from tissues. Once in the intestine, it can attract enough water to induce the bowels to defecate. Thus, magnesium citrate is used to treat constipation as well as rectal and colon problems. Since magnesium citrate stimulates the bowel to perform their task of egesting waste, it is not advisable to prolong its use. A prolonged usage of magnesium citrate may cause disruption in the natural metabolism of the bowels and the person may become dependent on laxatives.

The effect of magnesium citrate sets in within 30 to 180 minutes of its intake. If there is no effect even after this time, then the doctor must be re-consulted, as the problem may be something other than diarrhea.

Magnesium citrate is not advisable for children below the age of 6 years. The prescribed dosage for adults is 11 to 25 mg, while for children it is half of that. There are no old age related problems with magnesium citrate; hence, it can be safely taken even by the elderly in proper doses.

An overdose of magnesium citrate may cause acute and protracted diarrhea, but no hazardous effect on life. A very high dosage may cause dizziness, headaches, difficulty in swallowing, skin rashes and even blockage of the intestines. If there are any of the above symptoms, then a doctor must be immediately consulted and drug use must be stopped.

Magnesium citrate is a very harmless drug if taken in the correct dosage. It does not impair driving, swimming and other such activities. However, alcohol may interfere with its functioning. Though magnesium citrate generally does not interfere with other drugs, it is advisable not to take it within two hours of consuming any other drug.

People with kidney problems should not consume this drug. Especially pregnant and lactating women should steer clear from magnesium citrate. Magnesium citrate can enter breast milk and thus into the body of the embryo. Magnesium citrate is not prescribed for people with heart ailments and those who have suffered anal fissures in the past.

Calcium Magnesium Source Capsules - How to Find Good-Quality Calcium-Magnesium Source Capsules

November 9th, 2009

By John Gibb

Many of us have been told by doctors and health specialists that calcium and magnesium are good for our health. It is easier to add calcium-magnesium source capsules to our everyday diet than find high-quality separate calcium and magnesium supplements. The good news is that combined calcium-magnesium supplements are now available on the market!

Calcium-magnesium source capsules make use of refined salts of calcium and magnesium along with some other nutrients including vitamin D, vitamin K2 and minerals like sodium and potassium. These supplements help in overcoming nutrient deficiency in the body and also assist in the treatment of degenerative diseases and other health conditions.

Doctors recommend consuming up to 1200 mg of calcium and 300 mg of magnesium on a daily basis. This is the requirement of an average, healthy person in his/her 20’s or 30’s. If you have deficiency of either of the nutrients then consult your doctor or see an RDA chart to find the exact amount you should be consuming daily to overcome deficiency.

Calcium-magnesium source capsules have been manufactured to address the daily requirements of an individual. Normally 2-3 doses of these capsules are enough to fulfill a day’s needs. After completing an entire course of these capsules, have your serum calcium and serum magnesium measured to see how much you have improved. If there is a need, continue the course, otherwise reverting to a well-balanced diet, regular exercise and occasional doses of harmless calcium tablets is also enough.

Calcium-magnesium supplements are also available in the liquid form. These supplements make use of a pure calcium salt such as coral calcium, and vitamin D for its proper absorption. They are ideal to be used by elderly people and children under the age of 10. Women above the age of 40 are strongly advised to increase their daily calcium and magnesium intake by introducing calcium-magnesium source capsules to their everyday diet.

In any case, calcium obtained from diet or from calcium supplements should not exceed the limit of 2500 mg/day. You should be aware that abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood are also dangerous for health. To avoid this situation, buy high-quality calcium and magnesium supplements and carefully read the contents of a single tablet before starting the course.

Usually these supplement products do not require a doctor’s prescription, but to be on the safe side consult a health specialist and ask about the ingredients of a particular supplement product before using it.

Calcium Magnesium Potassium Boron & How Can They Help You

November 2nd, 2009

By Ben W Taylor

Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Boron

Potassium

Potassium is one of the basic minerals needed by the body for its proper functioning. Being an electrolyte it is capable of conducting electricity.

Potassium present in this supplement can help reduce its deficiency and maintain the required levels in human body. It is a positively charged ion, which is concentrated inside the cell while the sodium ion is concentrated outside the cell. An electrochemical gradient called membrane potential is created due to their concentration difference. Ion pumps use energy or ATP to take the sodium out from the cell membrane and bring in the potassium, hence maintaining this critical concentration gradient. This is very important for muscle contraction and heart functioning.

Deficiency

The potassium deficiency is called as hypokalemia. Hypokalemia results from prolonged vomiting, some forms of kidney disease, the use of some diuretics, or disturbances of metabolism. The symptoms of hypokalemia include muscle weakness, intestinal paralysis, fatigue, and cramps, and, which may lead to constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain.

Calcium

Another important mineral present in this supplement is Calcium. It is an important mineral of the body .Healthy bones and teeth require adequate amount of calcium. Bones contain large amounts of calcium. Calcium is also present in blood.

Calcium maintains proper functioning of muscles. It also helps in blood clotting action of enzymes and proteins are maintained by calcium. It also controls composition of body fluids.

Deficiency

Calcium deficiency can be the cause of weak bones and teeth. Calcium requirement can be fulfilled by a calcium-rich diet, so that the average loss of 400 to 500mg of calcium by a human body each day can be avoided.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a very vital trace mineral and its deficiency can affect several hundred functions performed in the body. About 50% of magnesium present in the human body is found in the bones, almost the rest of the magnesium in body cells. The blood contains about 1% of magnesium.

Magnesium maintains muscle and nerve functions, supports the immune system and keeps bones strong. It also regulates sugar level, body metabolism, blood pressure, protein synthesis and prevents hypertension and diabetes.

Deficiency

Many disorders take place due to magnesium deficiency. Its deficiency causes mitral valve prolapse, asthma, migraines and other allergies.

Boron

Another very important mineral present in this supplement is boron which is an essential trace mineral needed for several body functions such as maintaining joint and bone functions.

Boron helps in absorption of magnesium, calcium and vitamin D. The utilization of calcium and the activation of Vitamin D are also assisted by it. It should be taken along with other minerals and vitamins.

Benefits

Boron is good for healthy bones due to efficient absorption of calcium. Boron can also be helpful for postmenopausal osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and can be useful for ischemic heart disease
